Teaching Tolerance

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit civil rights organization, was established to protect and defend blacks during the civil rights movement. The SPLC established Teaching Tolerance about ten years ago to promote understanding and tolerance in our children and in the public schools. The SPLC is now a leading advocacy group for homosexual rights.

October 30, 2012 is Mix it Up Day. Over 2,400 public schools in the United States are participating. At lunch, students are encouraged to sit with students with whom they might not typically socialize. The SPLC is a group founded in the effort to fight hatred and bigotry and to seek justice for the vulnerable. What an important lesson for us and parents to teach our children. What an important message to promote in our society - regardless of the the vulnerable individual or group.

However, there are organizations and people trying to stop schools from participating in this effort to teach tolerance. In fact, there are organizations, if unsuccessful in bullying school administrators from participating in Mix It Up Day, that are warning parents to keep their children home from school on October 30. The American Family Association is one such organization. What sort of 'family' organization is this?

The American Family Association called the Southern Poverty Law Center a "fanantical pro-homosexual group that is trying to "bully push its gay agenda". This advocacy group that champions civil rights and fignts to protect the disenfranchised - of all kinds. What sort of a message do we send to our children if we teach them to exclude those who are different from us? What do we teach our children when we keep them home from school because we do not agree with lessons and precepts that differ from our personal beliefs?

The American Family Association, that calls itself a christian organization, states that the SPLC is trying to "intimidate and silence students who have a 'Biblical' view of homosexuality". A thinly vieled code for an intolerant and draconian view of homosexuality.

Peretz Family Law & Mediation advocates for individuals and families and promotes a tolerant and forward thinking approach to the definition of family. The family is an ever changing entity, legally and in every day life. The law sometimes lags behind the real world. The American Family Association is certainly not operating in the real world - at least not in a world promoting and teaching tolerance.

Teach your children tolerance. Teach your children not to hate.
